The South African Democratic Students Movement
(SADESMO) is worried by the long queues that were witnessed at
Universities, where students have had to resort to camping on
pavements and braving the searing heat in an attempt to get a
quality education.
Under the slogan 'Education is a right, not a
privilege,' SADESMO will once again urge the Department of
Higher Education to prioritize the building of more Universities
in a bid to avert the unfortunate circumstances we have
witnessed over the years. We believe if government can pledge
billions of Rands to projects such as the Gautrain and stadiums
then surely there is enough money to ensure every willing South
African youth has access to tertiary education. As long as the
provinces of Mpumalanga and The Northern Cape do not have
universities we will not see an end to this catastrophic
predicament.
We are dismayed by the Department's defensive
manoeuvres when requested to account for this unfortunate
situation, which has resulted in the hopes of thousands of
students dashed, thus leaving them vulnerable to the clutches of
criminal syndicates operating fly by night institutions.
