Legalising Prostitution - What's Next? Legalising Dagga?

10th July 2008

The eThekwini Municipality's decision to forge ahead with its plans to legalise Durban's red-light district, despite strong opposition, is laughable and one must question the reasoning behind this, said the IFP Youth Brigade Chairperson (IFPYB), Mrs Pat Lebenya-Ntanzi, today

Mrs Pat Lebenya-Ntanzi commented: "The municipality's reasoning behind this move is that they are legalising prostitution because it exists and that it is a reality we are facing.

"We find this comment laughable.

"Does it mean that we will now have to legalise designated smoking areas for dagga users because it is a reality we are facing? And will we now have special lanes for drivers who use their cellphones while driving because it is a reality we are facing? And will we say to taxi drivers that it is ok to jump the red-light, because it is a reality we are facing? I find this kind of logic myopic to say the least.

"The planned legalisation of Durban's red-light district, coupled with the street-renaming fiasco has over the past couple of months really called the eThekwini Municipality's credibility into question.

"The reality is that South Africa is facing a moral and leadership crisis.

Crime in South Africa is out of control - legalising prostitution will not improve any of the crises we are facing as a nation.

In conclusion Mrs Pat Lebenya-Ntanzi said: "The IFPYB would like to reiterate our call for the citizens of this South Africa to stand-up and say NO to legal red-light districts. Let's us all work towards restoring the moral fibre of our nation. The IFP believes that this vision can be achieved through our values of solidarity, freedom and unity in diversity and our principles and policies, coupled with bold leadership and political courage."
