Today the IFP-aligned South African
Democratic Students' Movement (SADESMO) noted the opening of the
3rd term of the academic year tomorrow, after a lengthy World
Cup holiday.
SADESMO National Spokesperson, Mr
Mkhuleko Hlengwa, said: "We wish all pupils and teachers well as
they embark on the third term. We hope that they have had a
relaxing holiday which has renewed their energies to face the
academic tasks that lie ahead."
Noting that the past holidays were held
during Fifa World Cup Hlengwa said:
"The hosting of the Fifa World Cup has
been a great nation-building exercise and has gone a long way
uniting South Africans, and as SADESMO we hope that the spirit
of unity, discipline and tolerance that has characterised the
World Cup will find a place in schools."
The Minister of Basic Education
announced last week there would be a change in curriculum.
Reflecting on this Hlengwa said: "After studying the proposed
changes carefully and objectively SADESMO feels vindicated, for
our call to have the failed OBE scrapped is long standing. We
are happy that OBE has finally walked the plank. The proposed
changes however need to be translated into action, such that
education can be restored back to its former glory in terms
content and quality and yield positive results for South
Africa."
Hlengwa further added: "It is
unfortunate that government fails to listen, and many learners
have had to endure the failure of OBE; and many will have to
live with the shortcomings of OBE. Government should learn to
listen to those who do not form part of its clique; for the
greater good of the country."
"We certainly hope that the new
curriculum will improve arithmetic, numeracy and basic reading;
and hopefully go a long way in improving maths and science. We
also hope that teachers will receive the necessary skilling,
capacitating and empowerment they need to fulfil the prescripts
of the curriculum; and schools must be given the resources they
need to this end," Hlengwa said.
In conclusion, Hlengwa said: "As
learners return to school tomorrow they do so with a new hope
that the future will be better because OBE has finally been
thrown straight to hell where it rightly belongs. Teachers,
learners and South Africans are better off without OBE. Imfundo
YaseNingizimu Afrika isikhishiwe ehlathini elimpisholo ebikulo
ngokuqedwa kwe-OBE."
