The Inkatha
Freedom Party pins its hopes on the newly-elected leadership of
the KwaZulu-Natal African National Congress to overturn the
renaming of Mangosuthu Highway. The IFP expressed this view in a
statement it issued today to congratulate the ANC Provincial
leadership elected last weekend. Dr Bonginkosi Buthelezi, IFP
Provincial Secretary stated:
"On behalf
of the IFP in KwaZulu-Natal I wish to congratulate the
newly-elected Provincial Executive Committee of the
KwaZulu-Natal African National Congress under its Chairperson,
Dr Zweli Mkhize. In particular, we congratulate the whole
KwaZulu-Natal ANC for holding a peaceful conference which is
unlike the unfortunate spectacle that we have seen in recent ANC
conferences in other Provinces.
"We are
hopeful too that the current leadership of the ANC will be able
to place the good of the Province above party-political
interests by working towards reviving good working relations
between the ANC and the IFP. It is our conviction that good
working relations between the two predominantly-black parties
are essential, if we are serious about maximizing service
delivery to millions of our people. Importantly, we are
optimistic that, in the interest of peaceful coexistence and
progress in the Province, the new ANC leadership will revisit
controversial decisions such as the one taken by the ANC-led
eThekwini Municipality to rename Mangosuthu Highway into
Griffiths Mxenge Highway."
