The Howard College SADESMO Branch at the
University of KwaZulu Natal would like to express its
disapproval with the behaviour of the ANCYL this past weekend,
as they were holding their Provincial Conference on the campus.
This ANCYL Conference came at a very
crucial time for the whole University, more especially Howard
College, as students are writing their half yearly exams.
Students residing at the Florence Powell
residence, which is the students' residence close to where the
actual Congress was held, raised their complaints over the high
level of noise that was made during the proceedings of the
Conference, as well as by the delegates who played ANC songs
loudly from their cars until the early hours of the morning,
whilst consuming alcohol. Students are writing exams and this
high level of noise was inappropriate and distracting. The
behaviour of the delegates was totally unacceptable and the
filth they left around the campus is repulsive.
SADESMO had placed posters around campus
wishing students GOOD LUCK for their exams, only to find on
Monday that all of these posters have been torn down.
Furthermore, students who were wearing
their SADESMO T-shirts on campus were intimidated and we have no
doubt these acts were carried out by the very same delegates who
turned this campus into an uncouth ANCYL bash.
We urge the University management not to
allow such events to occur in the future during the exam period
as it disturbs academic processes on campus, as students
unfortunately experienced over this last weekend.
