At the invitation of former President Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria, IFP President Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi MP will be travelling to Abeokuta, Ogun State to deliver a lecture in celebration of the 82nd birthday of HE Dr Obasanjo on 5 March 2019.
This invitation echoes an invitation sent to Prince Buthelezi by President Obasanjo in 1976, to visit State House and to deliver a lecture at the Nigerian Institute for International Affairs. That invitation was sent specifically to enable Prince Buthelezi to avoid being present on the day the first homeland received nominal independence from the apartheid regime.
As Chief Minister of the KwaZulu Government, Prince Buthelezi rejected the grand scheme of apartheid to portion off the sections of South Africa onto which they had forced the oppressed majority, turning them into independent states, no longer part of South Africa.
His rejection of independence for KwaZulu collapsed this grand scheme of apartheid, and enabled millions of black South Africans to retain their South African citizenship.
In honour of this and Prince Buthelezi’s many other contributions to the liberation struggle, former President Obasanjo has asked Prince Buthelezi to speak to an international audience on the theme of “Colonialism, Apartheid, Freedom, and South Africa Rising”.
Prince Buthelezi will pay tribute to the exceptional legacy of Dr Olusegun Obasanjo, whose work particularly in the Commonwealth Group of Eminent Persons brought awareness to the international world of the day to day plight of oppressed South Africans. Prince Buthelezi will thank Dr Obasanjo for supporting freedom and democracy, not only in South Africa, but across the continent.
His lecture will be made available to the media upon delivery, on Tuesday 5 March 2019.
