NATIONAL COUNCIL MEETING 7-8 December 2004
RESOLUTION
POLITICAL VIOLENCE
The National Council of the Inkatha Freedom Party, which met in Ulundi on December 7-8, 2004, noted with abhorrence the escalation of politically motivated violence in KwaZulu-Natal and the apparent perception of impunity by the perpetrators,
Resolved:
- to note with grave concern that the political assassination of IFP leaders, the most recent of which was the assassination of Langa Ntshangase last week, have never been brought to justice;
- to reaffirm the historical duty of the IFP and the ANC to make joint appeals to our respective constituencies to call for a cessation of violence for good;
- to call upon the leadership of the ANC to respond speedily to the President of the IFP’s letter of 02 December, 2004, to the Deputy President of the ANC appealing to the ANC leadership to show the political will to end violence and for an investigation into the pattern of systematic targeted assassinations over the last 15 years;
- to call upon the government to make the fight against political violence a law enforcement priority in the same way as it was done so in respect of other types of crime such as rape;
