IFP Caucuses Strategise to Strengthen Local Governance

Feb 5, 2015 | Press Releases

Over the next two days the IFP’s Members of Parliament and Members of the Provincial Legislatures are meeting in a Joint Caucus Workshop to strategise on how to return the focus of South Africa’s politics to service delivery and strengthening local government.

Speaking on the aims of the Workshop, the IFP’s Secretary General, the Hon. Ms Sibongile Nkomo MP, said, “We are coordinating our various programmes across caucuses nationally and in the provinces to ensure that the First Term of Parliament and the Legislatures is characterised by effective service and real issues.

“This is vital in the current political environment in which non-issues, like dress code in Parliament, are dominating debate. The IFP is determined to move the debate back to the immediate and real challenges faced by our people.

“We are heading for another Local Government Election,” explained Ms Nkomo, “But rather than engaging the issues that affect communities across South Africa, and rather than talking about the serious deficiencies in almost all municipalities, political representatives are grandstanding in games of one-upmanship. That is not the way of the IFP.

“Over the course of 40 years, the IFP has focussed on real issues, saying what needs to be said and doing what needs to be done for the sake of South Africa. The Joint Caucus Workshop of today and tomorrow is planning for exactly this.”
