In December 2012 eight people died after taking part in a 4km run at the Harry Gwala stadium in Pietermaritzburg. The fitness test was part of a Road Traffic Inspectorate's job recruitment process.
More than 34 000 people qualified to apply for the 90 advertised trainee posts. A total of 15 600 applicants attended the fitness test on December 27 and a similar number on December 28.
The then KwaZulu-Natal Premier, Dr Zweli Mkhize appointed the commission of inquiry into the deaths of these eight people.
The commission was given five months to complete its work, and another month to submit its findings and recommendations.
In 2015 the former MEC of Transport Mchunu, now the current Premier tabled a report in this House where he reflected on measures taken to implement the commission’s recommendations. It was further reported that the investigation into the institution of internal disciplinary proceedings was still continuing and was conducted by an independent party and the development of the RTI recruitment policy was in progress.
The IFP seek answers from the Premier on what progress has been made in this matter including the compensation of the families of the eight people who lost their lives?
