As the IFP in KwaZulu-Natal, we wish to add our warning voice to that of Mr. Thabani Gambu, Director in KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development, Tourism, and Environmental Affairs, regarding the waste that is choking Mayville in eThekwini, as reported by today’s Isolezwe.
Mayville is indeed a health disaster waiting to happen anytime. And indeed, unless something dramatic is done now, KwaZulu-Natal residents will be consumed in self-inflicted weather catastrophes.
We fully support the call that an intensive awareness campaign directed to all residents as well as other creative ways must be embarked upon urgently. In addition, eThekwini Municipality and those responsible for collecting garbage must relook at their waste-collection schedules to ensure that they keep up with the population increase.
And eThekwini Municipality must urgently address this disaster before it is too late.
