The IFP in KwaZulu-Natal calls on the MEC of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Nomusa Dube-Ncube to urgently take action against the Imbabazane Mayor, Phindile Strydom whose car was yet again involved in an accident.
“On Friday the mayor’s driver, driving a white Toyota Fortuner smashed into a stationary Chevrolet in the parking lot. The mayor was in the Toyota dressed in her ANC attire when the accident occurred. After both the mayor and her driver checked the damage, the mayor instructed her driver to leave the scene without reporting the matter to the police. Assisted by community members, traffic officers were able to trace the mayor and her driver. This a blatant disregard of the law and must be viewed as a criminal offence,” said IFP Leader in the KZN Legislature, Mr Blessed Gwala, MPL.
“The owner of the damaged car contacted the mayor and her driver at the Imbabazane offices and they requested that the matter should be settled out of court. This new Fortuner is being used by the mayor after her previous vehicle which cost the municipality about R3million was written off, when she was not in the vehicle, near Mooi River. It would appear that the mayor and her body guards have taken a conscious decision to destroy council vehicles and show a total disregard for the rule of law. In failing to act decisively against the mayor, the MEC is failing the people of Imbabazane,” continued Mr Gwala.
“We want to see the MEC taking action against the mayor and her bodyguards. We are aware that if it was an IFP mayor, the ANC in Imbabazane, MEC and the ANC provincial leadership would have been very vocal in calling for the removal of the mayor, but because it’s an ANC mayor they are turning a blind eye. We demand that the MEC shows leadership and acts in this matter,” concluded Mr Gwala.
The IFP calls for the urgent removal of Imbabazane Mayor, Phindile Strydom along with her driver and bodyguards.
