Abuse Of Public Funds By Ethekwini Municipality

The Inkatha Freedom Party demands answers from eThekwini Municipality as to why it is necessary to waste public funds on radio advertising to invite 180 schools to attend the water seminar.

“Since this seminar is intended for 180 schools in the eThekwini area, we need to know what was the need to advertise it on radio. This advertisement is costing the tax payer huge amounts of money which could be put to better use. We believe that it would have been much more cost effective to send emails or letters of invitation to the schools concerned rather than to advertise on radio. The municipality must provide clarity as to how much these adverts cost and what was the need for such expenditure. This is public money intended for the delivery of critical services and we see this was a complete abuse of public funds,” said Hon Blessed Gwala, IFP National Chairman.

“As a moral opposition the IFP will not permit this to continue without being exposed and challenged. The abuse of state funds by ANC led municipalities has become widespread and it must be seen as illegal and irresponsible. We object to this blatant use of the state resources. There is no doubt that corruption plays a big role in municipalities not being able to rise to the occasion and deliver on their mandate and legislative responsibilities of reporting on their financial performance as required by the MFMA. Expenditure towards this venture should be measured against service delivery challenges facing communities in the metro” concluded Mr Gwala.
