IFP Briefed About National Philharmonic Orchestra

The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), following engagements with representatives of the Mzansi National Philharmonic Orchestra (NPO), has been briefed about its work and programmes.

We are in full support of the mission of the Mzansi NPO, which is “to contribute meaningfully to the improvement of the quality of life of all communities in South Africa by embracing its responsibility to play a significant role in the cultural life of South Africa’s vibrant and diverse communities; creating platforms within communities for the advancement of the experience of orchestral music, including targeting regions that don’t have their own regional orchestras; inspiring young people to discover their full potential through creativity and innovation; creating world-class orchestral music experiences and touring events nationally and internationally.”

Initial reports at the time of the launch of the NPO alleged that funding, as well as musicians, were being diverted from other projects. However, we have been assured that this is not the case, and that a portion of the NPO budget will also be allocated to support regional orchestras. Further, it seems that there were misconceptions around the musicians, as they are able to retain their places in regional orchestras while also performing with the NPO.

As a national entity, the NPO will also be able to expose musicians to opportunities that might not have been available to them as members of regional orchestras.

In relation to funding, we expect the NPO to adhere to all the requirements as regards transparency and accountability, as we do of all and any entities that represent our nation.

We further trust that the Mzansi NPO will bolster and contribute meaningfully to South Africa’s diverse cultural landscape.
