IFP Calls For A Thorough Forensic Investigation Into Umlalazi Municipality Bankruptcy

The Inkatha Freedom Party calls for a thorough forensic investigation into management of municipal funds after reports that the uMlalazi Municipality is bankrupt.

“This investigation must be conducted because we have learnt that this municipality is so bankrupt that now its employees are panicking after they learnt that the municipal coffers are now empty and it is not clear how their salaries will be paid. It must be investigated how municipal funds were depleted and by who. The Chief Financial Officer and the Municipal Manager must answer and be held accountable for this mess.

We fail to understand that how can the municipality spend its budget in just two months. All the answers will come from the forensic investigation,” said IFP KZN Provincial Spokesperson on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Hon Princess Phumzile Buthelezi MPL.

“This revelation is true evidence of a failing government led by the ANC in this municipality, the province and the country as a whole. The governing party has lost complete control of its municipalities. It shows lack of leadership and blatant mismanagement of taxpayer’s funds. It is not fair for the people of uMlalazi to be kept in the dark over their sinking municipality.

The Department of Local Government should step up and fulfil its legislative and administrative role to ensure that municipalities perform in order to better the lives of our communities,” continued Hon Princess Buthelezi.

The IFP further calls on the KZN MEC of COGTA Nomusa Dube-Ncube to urgently put the uMlalazi Municipality under administration. She must ensure that all those involved in bringing the municipality to its knees are brought to book.
