The Inkatha Freedom Party calls on the KZN MEC of Transport, Mxolisi Kaunda to urgently intervene in the ongoing killing of taxi drivers in KwaSwayimane which is alleged to be caused by dispute over routes.
“The recent killing of another taxi driver calls for urgent action from the MEC of Transport. We are very concerned about this ongoing killing of taxi drivers as Christmas is upon us. One wonders if people will use taxis since their lives are also in danger because these killers just shoot randomly without thinking about the passengers inside the taxi. No one knows when these killers will strike again,” said IFP Leader in the KZN Legislature, Mr Blessed Gwala.
“We do not wish to see a return to a state of lawlessness which saw the loss of thousands of mostly innocent lives in the past. There are a few trigger-happy and stubborn elements which are responsible for the instability in the taxi industry and these individuals must be isolated. We must make a difference between ‘chance-takers’, the so-called izinkabi or hitmen and those who are earning a legitimate living by driving taxis. Taxi owners must never allow bad elements to destroy their business which is legitimate. We cannot afford to have the taxi industry being wrecked by so much havoc, and thus the need to engage everyone involved and make sure we stabilise the taxi industry in the best interests of commuters and the people of KwaSwayimane,” concluded Mr Gwala.
The IFP calls for a thorough investigation into KwaSwayimane taxi violence and those found to be involved must be held responsible and face the full might of the law.
