IFP Condemns ANC Voter Intimidation in Ward 99

Nov 14, 2022 | Press Releases

The IFP has opened a case with the Umkomaas Police station and lodged a complaint against the ANC with the IEC, ahead of a crucial by-election in Ward 99, eThekwini on 14 December 2022.

The ward became vacant after the ANC’s Councillor Mnqobi Victor Molife was gunned down in September.

Subsequently, the IFP has launched a robust campaign in that ward. However, the ANC is currently displaying its normal anti-democratic tendencies through intimidating IFP leaders and supporters.

In a video widely distributed, ANC supporters are seen burning IFP t-shirts while singing songs that suggest that the IFP is not welcome to campaign in the KwaThoyane area, thereby effectively creating a no-go area within that ward for the IFP.

We have opened a case of intimidation at SAPS in Umkomaas and have asked that they act immediately before anyone is hurt while exercising their democratic right to support a political party of their choice.

We are further calling on the IEC to immediately step in as the upcoming by-elections, as things stand, will not be free and fair.

We wish to remind the IEC of its responsibilities to enforce the electoral code of conduct and to hold to account the rogue ANC, its leadership and supporters.
