The IFP condemns the fatal shooting at a taxi rank in the vicinity of Dr Pixley KaSeme and Brook streets in the Durban CBD this morning where six people were killed and several were wounded.
“The IFP expresses its deep concerns about this wanton loss of lives after such incidents of shootings, which result in the killing of people and endangering citizens going about their daily lives. We are extremely concerned and worried at the escalating incidents of violence in this province to the extent that even the Durban CBD is no longer safe. Although we cannot speculate whether this incident is related to taxi violence but we are convinced that thorough and swift investigations must be conducted to see whether this is associated with taxi violence,” said IFP Spokesperson on Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Blessed Gwala MPL.
“Every step possible needs to be taken to apprehend those responsible for these attacks and ensure that justice is done. The loss of life and attacks on our defenceless citizens is unjustifiable regardless of the circumstances. The MEC of Transport, Willies Mchunu must send officials from the Department of Transport so that they can engage with the taxi association to seek solutions, but for now we must give police space so that we can get a clear picture of exactly what’s the motive behind this killing,” continued Mr Gwala.
“The IFP is very concerned about the alarming number of illegal guns turning up in KZN. There should be tougher penalties for the illegal possession of guns. We recommend that the state seriously consider imposing more severe penalties for the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. Fraud, corruption and poor implementation of the Firearms Control Act means that people who are not fit to possess a gun are issued with firearm certificates, licences and permits. We need to close the gap where these legal guns leak into the illegal pool,” concluded Mr Gwala.
The IFP sends its deepest condolences to the families of all those who lost their lives in the senseless killing today. Our hearts go out to the families of all those killed in cold blood.
