IFP: Condolences to Family of RTI Officer Killed in Hit and Run

It is with deep sadness that we, the IFP in Kwa-Zulu Natal record our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the RTI officer who tragically was a casualty of a hit and run accident while on duty. While details are sketchy at this early stage, we are aware that the officer concerned was working on the N3, near the Tugela River the afternoon of the 26th August when a vehicle knocked him down and sped off. The officer, unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.

We commend the paramedics, RTI, forensic personnel and other emergency officials who promptly responded and were on the scene to assist. Unfortunately, their efforts could not save the life of the officer.

We call for the investigation into this tragic and senseless accident to be prioritised. Reckless driving should never be condoned but to knock down an officially on duty and speed away without concern of the consequences is an act devoid of compassion and should be strongly condemned. From the beginning of the year, far too many lives have been lost on our province’s roads due to negligent and reckless driving. We, as the IFP have called numerous times for heightened police vigilance and harsher penalties for those who flout the rules of the road. We hope that the driver responsible either has the good sense to hand himself or herself over or be apprehended soon. Hopefully the arrest and conviction will send out a clear message that there is no place on our roads for those who do not value human lives.

At this sad time, we mourn with the family, friends and the RTI and are saddened that the RTI has lost a dedicated official while yet another family has lost a son, husband, father and bread winner.
