The IFP demands mandatory jail sentence for reckless drivers. It is high time to impose the sentence as road users are now at the “complete mercy” of these reckless drivers.
This comes after three teenage schoolgirls were killed after a minibus taxi ploughed into them as they made their way to school on Wednesday morning on Dumisani Makhaye Drive near the VN Naik School for the deaf in the Newlands East area in Durban.
The IFP believes that such measures were needed to curb the purported rise in the number of reckless driving incidents. The IFP is very worried about the number of road accidents caused by reckless driving and one of our drastic steps is to introduce stricter laws.
Fear of being hit by a speeding vehicle on the roads is among the overriding anxieties experienced by people, especially in South Africa’s roads. Safety is the number one concern and it depends on us. We need to make a personal commitment to be disciplined and be aware of the risks.
The IFP further calls on the various transport unions, taxi associations to continuously educate their members on road safety regulations to prevent unnecessary road accidents. Drivers should desist from negative practices on the road such as speeding, overloading and drink-driving, which will lead to accidents.
The IFP encourages law enforcement agencies to fully enforce the road safety regulations and make sure that those found culpable are brought to book to serve as a deterrent to others who may want to follow in the same path.
If a driver commits a mistake while on the steering wheel, many passengers in the vehicle may lose their lives and some may sustain various degrees of injury and sometimes rendering them permanently incapacitated, therefore the police should strictly enforce road traffic regulations.
