IFP: Dysfunctional ANC Led Municipalities Must be Put Under Administration

The Inkatha Freedom Party in KwaZulu-Natal calls on the KZN MEC of Cogta, Nomusa Dube Ncube to use her constitutional power and put the Inkosi Langalibalele municipality in Estcourt and the Mooi/Mpofana municipality under administration.

“When addressing mayors and senior municipal officials on governance issues in Durban this week the MEC admitted that these municipality are dysfunctional; therefore, it is imperative that she must put them under administration once and for all. It is a well-known fact that if it was an IFP led municipalities the MEC would have called for them to be put under administration but because they are governed by her political party she is trying by all means not to put them under administration.

The Inkosi Langalibalele Municipality recently admitted that it was almost bankrupt. Again, the Mooi/Mpofana municipality, which received a disclaimer last year, is in dire straits due to infighting in the council and a poor revenue base and collection. There are fears it will receive another disclaimer when the audit opinions are released,” said IFP Leader in the KZN Provincial Legislature, Mr Blessed Gwala MPL.

“In addition, the Inkatha Freedom Party calls for a thorough forensic investigation into management of municipal funds after reports that the Inkosi Langalibalele Municipality is bankrupt. It must be investigated how municipal funds were depleted and by who. The Chief Financial Officer and the Municipal Manager must answer and be held accountable for this mess,” continued Mr Gwala.

“This revelation is true evidence of a failing government led by the ANC in this municipality, the province and the country as a whole. The governing party has lost complete control of its municipalities. It shows lack of leadership and blatant mismanagement of taxpayer’s funds. It is not fair for the people of Inkosi Langalibalele to be kept in the dark over their sinking municipality,” concluded Mr Gwala.
