IFP Effects Changes to the UMhlathuze Council

On 22 November 2021, the IFP National Executive Committee (NEC) approved the recommendations of the National Deployment Committee (NDC) regarding the deployment of office-bearers in Councils, following the 2021 Local Government Elections.

With regards to UMhlathuze Local Municipality, the name of Hon. Xolani Ngwezi, MP was approved for Mayor.

As his name was not on the PR List and because the IEC’s Rules do not allow for changes to Lists during the period of constituting Municipal Councils, Cllr Dr Nkonzoyakhe Donda was approved as caretaker Mayor. This decision was communicated to Dr Donda by the National Deployment Committee before he took office.

Accordingly, when the UMhlathuze Local Municipality was constituted on 23 November 2021, Dr Donda was elected Mayor.

Now that the Party is able to amend its PR List, the NEC resolved on Monday, 6 December 2021, to implement its 22 November 2021 decision that Hon. Xolani Ngwezi, MP, be redeployed from the NCOP, to be the Mayor of UMhlathuze Local Municipality.  Dr Donda has accordingly resigned as Mayor, and the Party thanks him for holding the fort whilst the Party was seized with effecting the necessary changes and amendments to its Lists.

Comrade Ngwezi is no stranger to local government. He has previously served on the Exco of the King Cetshwayo District Municipality, before being deployed to the National Assembly in 2017, and NCOP in 2021. He currently serves as the Chairperson of the IFP in UMhlathuze Constituency. The IFP wishes Comrade Ngwezi well in his new deployment.
