IFP: KZN MEC of Community Safety Must Address Crime in Umzumbe

The IFP calls on the KZN MEC for Community Safety and Liaison, Bheki Ntuli, and KZN Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt General Khombinkosi Jula, to urgently address the high crime rate reported in KwaQoloqolo, Umzumbe, South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal.

The IFP has been inundated with calls from concerned community members from the area who live in constant fear, following attacks on locals.

Three families are said to have been attacked, robbed of their belongings, and other incidents resulted in a loss of life. It is alleged that ruthless criminals are terrorising the area without fear of prosecution. We therefore request that a mobile police station be provided in the area, to ensure the safety of our people. The 40km distance between this area and Hibberdene police station remains a barrier to proper policing.

The recent wave of high-profile crimes in the province calls for stringent measures to be put in place. We implore the KZN MEC of Community Safety and Police to come up with a crime-fighting strategy in KwaZulu-Natal. The IFP is further concerned about the mass killing of seven men, who were killed in what appears to be execution-style, at eMsahweni in KwaMakhutha last Wednesday. We have since noted a trend in crimes involving gangsterism and drug trafficking, as the victims were found in possession of drugs.

We also urge the KZN Police Commissioner to intervene in what is believed to be a family feud between the Ngcobo families in Taylors, outside Pietermaritzburg which has resulted in the death of five family members. Some family members are currently in hiding, and blame police officials for dragging their feet in investigating the torching of their vehicles and properties, dating back as far as 2017. The case must be investigated thoroughly by the police.

The principal duty of every government is to ensure the safety and security of their citizens, as enshrined in the in the constitution.

The IFP believes that there must be a focused and sustained action on the ground, assuring the victims that government is on their side, and those who think they can get away with such offences must know that they will face the full might of law.

Nonetheless we applaud Commissioner Jula’s successful intervention in Bobo Mbutho’s killing in Tongaat, where seven men were brought to book.
