IFP: R350 grant monies the incentive for KZN Post Office robberies

The IFP believes that the R350 grant monies are the incentive for the recent spate of Post Office robberies in KZN.

We are concerned about the increasing number of Post Offices that are being targeted by criminals in the Province. Post Offices in Hammarsdale, Amanzimtoti and Tongaat were all robbed in the space of a week. Undisclosed sums of cash were stolen at each branch, while in Tongaat, an employee was assaulted.

It seems that the robberies might be on the increase, as the Post Offices are known to be carrying large amounts of cash so as to pay grants. We suspect this might be an inside job, and the theft of grant money means that those that suffer are the poorest of the poor.

The IFP urges Post Office management to increase security measures in order to safeguard the money allocated to pay grants.

The IFP appeals to law enforcement agencies to apply a zero-tolerance approach towards these criminals and opportunists. They must punish wrong-doing, so as to make life easier for law-abiding citizens. We cannot allow law-breakers to have a foothold in society.

The IFP urges the Hawks to work around the clock to apprehend the criminals who are committing these crimes and targeting the Post Offices.
