IFP: Road Accident Statistics Are Horrifying

Today Minister Dipuo Peters released the road accident statistics in South Africa for the Period 1 December 2015 to 11 January 2016.

The statistics reveal a total of 1755 road related deaths, 10% of which were children during this period. This is the sad reality that we face on our roads today in South Africa.

We further note that over 6000 motorists were arrested for drunken driving this season. Although this only accounts for 1.1% of the total people screened, we are still of the opinion that number can and must be improved upon and we therefore continue to support a “No alcohol at all for drivers” policy.

Another issue of great concern is the use of cell phones whilst driving which has now reached inexcusable levels and been the cause of many road accidents. Legislation must be enacted which provides for harsh criminal sanction for those found guilty of such reckless behaviour.

We ask the minister, “What is it going to take for the death toll to be lowered in South Africa?” as the current system is clearly failing. As a start, we propose greater visible policing which must become a 365 day per year practice. If more traffic officers are required, then they must be employed! South Africans are crying out for much needed jobs.

We additionally call for sustained and accurate statistical information to measure progress and success, better maintained roads, and active year-round road safety education for all road users, including pedestrians.

To the people of South Africa, we plead with you, do not text and drive, maintain your vehicles, abstain from drinking and driving and obey all the rules of the road. It is for the safety of all.
