IFP urges Speaker to urgently table suspension of fuel levy Motion

By Hon. M. Hlengwa MP
IFP National Spokesperson

The IFP welcomes the commitment made by the ANC yesterday in calling on its own ranks in the ANC-led government to suspend fuel levies.

This commitment by the ANC must now translate into an action plan and we urge the Speaker of Parliament, Ms Baleka Mbete MP, to urgently table the IFP motion for debate and for the ANC MPs to vote for our motion.

We have written to Speaker Mbete, to request an Urgent Debate as this is a matter of National Public Importance in terms of Parliament’s Rule 130 (1).

In a statement released yesterday, ANC Spokesperson, Pule Mabe reiterated our call for the suspension of fuel levies and further said that the ruling party cannot turn a blind eye nor wish the unbearable impact of the latest fuel hike away.

Therefore, the IFP is of the view that the Finance Minister, Nhlanhla Nene and Energy Minister, Jeff Radebe, must take the nation into their confidence and table a solid mitigation plan in Parliament at our debate.

The ANC government has increased VAT, put up rates and taxes across metros and councils in the country and now commuters wouldn’t be able to get to work nor are motorists able to fill up their tanks.

The ANC in Parliament voted for these increases and they now have an opportunity to vote against another fuel increase and to suspend the fuel levies until such a time the global and local economy stabilises.
