IFP WELCOMES LIFE SENTENCING OF UYINENE MRWETYANA’S KILLER

Mkhuleko Hlengwa MP
IFP National Spokesperson

The IFP welcomes the concurrent sentences handed down by Judge Gayaat Salie-Hlophe, today in the Western Cape High Court in the Uyinene Mrwetyana Case.

Justice has prevailed and we are certain that it will provide the much-needed closure for Uyinene’s immediate family, friends and all young women who suffer in silence mostly at the hands of cruel men in showing a clear disregard for governments attempts in clamping down on Gender Based Violence (GBV).

Uyinene’s killer will rightfully remain behind bars for a very long time, as he will ponder on his wrongdoings during his one sentence for murder, one each for two counts of sexual assault and five-years for defeating the ends of justice.

The speedy manner in which this case has been resolved is commendable. We urge all Law Enforcement Officers to adopt the very same approach in apprehending, prosecuting and sentencing of predators who prey on our girls and young women.

This case shows that justice does not have to be delayed and thousands of grieving parents, community members and friends no longer have to wait for long periods of time before justice is served.

The IFP once again, extends our deepest sympathies to all who loved Uyinene and her kind, calm and passionate demeanor.
