IFP Wishes NDPP Adv Shamila Batohi Well

Feb 1, 2019 | Press Releases

The IFP sends its patriotic wishes to Adv Shamila Batohi as she assumes her position as the National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP).

She assumes office during a difficult time in South Africa when the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) continues to make news and headlines for all the wrong reasons as it has raked up a record of corruption and maladministration and has for time immemorial buckled unashamedly to political pressure and manipulation.

The revelations at the Mokgoro Commission and the Zondo Commission are the latest reality check yet that indeed we are coming from an era of #NineWastedYears wherein the rule of law was replaced by the rule of cronyism, nepotism and blatant corruption.

The IFP therefore wishes her well in righting the wrongs in the NPA with a view to restore public confidence, improve effectiveness, efficiency and uphold constitutional integrity. As a new broom we hope she will sweep clean the mess and root out the corruption.

Her appointment, notwithstanding her competence and expertise, must also be celebrated from the perspective of Adv Batohi being the first woman to hold the position of NDPP. This is indeed a significant positive for women progression in South Africa, wherein as we grapple with the ills of patriarchy, a strong message is being sent to every young girl that South Africa is alive with possibility and opportunity as we level the playing and push back on the frontiers of gender based inequality.

Let us all now give Adv Batohi the space and time to set into motion her plans to turn around the NPA which is an integral part of our democracy’s system of checks and balances.

The IFP wishes Adv Batohi well.
