IFPYB Calls for Safe, Secure, Student Accommodation

In the early hours of Wednesday, 22 September, four students at the University of the Free State were shot by robbers. Tragically, two of the students died at the scene and the other two are fighting for their lives in hospital.

The Inkatha Freedom Party Youth Brigade (IFPYB) are deeply saddened by the passing of such young academics. We wish to offer our sincere condolences to the bereaved families and friends, and hope that they may find some comfort in these difficult times.

We would also further like to wish the two students in hospital a speedy recovery.

The lives of these young academics were taken by robbers that demanded laptops, money, and cell phones. Despite the students offering no resistance, they were shot by three unknown suspects.

We note that the prolonged delay in the provision of adequate and affordable student housing, is one of the root causes of criminals targeting students. The Department of Higher Education and Training has failed to make proper provision for safe, secure, student accommodation, which places the lives of students at risk.

We call on the SAPS to bring those who are responsible to for this horrific act to justice swiftly.
