The Inkatha Freedom Party seeks urgent answers from the KZN MEC of Transport , Hon. Mxolisi Kaunda regarding time frames in respect of the introduction of online bookings. This will be a positive step in addressing the backlogs in most licencing and testing centres around the province.
” It is of serious concern to learn that since 2013, the department of transport has been conducting research to find technologically advanced strategies such as online bookings to help reduce backlogs, yet no progress has been made. In 2014, the department commissioned a study about an online booking system but to date, the process remains incomplete and there are still gaps on how to prevent fraud. This translates to the inefficiency of the department and a failure on its part to fulfil it’s obligations.” said IFP KZN Provincial Spokesperson on Transport Hon.Steven Moodley MPL.
” We urge the MEC to provide answers as to the backlogs in our licencing centres. This issue should be fast tracked as a matter of urgency as people are frustrated with the delays they are experiencing at these centres. It is time to deliver to the people of our province and we hope that the vigour that drove the MEC to deliver projects in Nquthu ahead of the recent By – elections will once again prevail in finding tangible solutions to this problem,” continued Hon Moodley.
” We are also concerned about why only cash or cheques are being accepted at the Rossburgh testing centre rather than allowing people to swipe their cards when making payments for bookings or licence renewals. This can place people’s lives at risk especially since crime is rampant. It must be mandatory that all licence and testing centres use card machines in the interest of safety.” concluded Hon Moodley.
The IFP will pursue this matter in the KZN Legislature by seeking answers from the MEC during Transport Portfolio Meetings and by submission of written questions.
