KZN Public Works MEC Must Swiftly Deal With Alleged Corruption in EDTEA Tender

The IFP is shocked to learn of the allegations that a fly-by-night company, Upscale Properties, was awarded a contract by Mr SS Buthelezi, a Deputy Director of Supply Chain Management, in the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Public Works. According to reports, Upscale Properties is owned by Silindile Xulu, a daughter of Mr Thulani Xulu, a Member of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature, and he (Hon. Xulu) is a co-owner.  The company was registered just three weeks before the advertisement of the tender to provide office space to the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs.

The IFP calls on the MEC for Public Works, Hon. Peggy Nkonyeni, to suspend the implicated official and institute an investigation into these serious allegations. The KwaZulu-Natal ANC leadership must also conduct its own investigation, to establish if indeed Hon. Xulu had anything to do with this clearly corrupt activity. This, especially in light of the public letter that the ANC President, Mr Cyril Ramaphosa, recently directed at all ANC members, calling for them to disassociate themselves from any form of corrupt activities.

We hope that both the Department and the ruling ANC will act swiftly and that they will not hesitate to deal decisively, should anyone be found to be involved in this shameful act. They owe this to the ANC, for they have been challenged to demonstrate their commitment to the call of the ANC President.
