National Police Investigation Required to Address Cape Trains

By KP Sithole MP
IFP Spokesperson on Transport

Metrorail Trains in Cape Town continue to run while thousands of railway commuters are not kept safe and fear another train will be burnt to the ground.

Metrorail in the Cape which is a subsidiary of the Passenger Railway Agency of South Africa (PRASA) has been neglected for far too long. It is unbelievable that 30 trains at a time would be delayed or cancelled – thousands of Capetonians utilise the system and cannot get to work.

PRASA and Metrorail have been investigating cases, yet no action is taken and now it is high time that the National Police Commissioner and the Minister of Police intervenes and takes strong action in order to address this issue.

It cannot be that month’s go-by without providing feedback to commuters on these “investigations”. PRASA together with the City of Cape Town and Western Cape provincial authorities have failed commuters.

It is the duty of the State to protect its citizens from harm. Minister Bheki Cele would do well to address this matter with the urgency it deserves.
