The Inkatha Freedom Party is deeply concerned that the KZN Legislature is no longer an arena for robust and meaningful debates.
“The KZN Legislature was once a venue for active engagement amongst the various political parties called upon by the people of this province to represent them. Now the Legislature represents a sterile, passive environment where the ruling party controls what topics are debated much to the detriment of public interest. There are many serious issues such as violent killings, abuse of children and the elderly, severe drought, shortage of decent housing, lack of proper sanitation at informal settlements and many more that face communities across our province but these are not tabled for debate in the Legislature. Instead of addressing the violent killings at hostels in KZN, this government is focused on addressing violence in Gauteng hostels when that should be the responsibility of the Gauteng government”, said IFP Leader in the KZN Legislature, Hon Blessed Gwala MPL.
“In order to justify its position as the executive authority in the province, the ANC would introduce an important item as an executive statement for debate. This does not allow opposition parties sufficient time to debate in a meaningful and robust manner. In this way the ANC-led government is stifling the opposition in an attempt to conceal its many failures,” continued Mr Gwala.
“The many service delivery protests across the province is testament to the failures of this government which are being covered up by fancy imbizos and indabas. If this government has nothing to fear, it should introduce topics that are relevant to the people it is called upon to serve. Debates must become vibrant, meaningful and beneficial again otherwise this legislature will remain a talk-shop”, concluded Hon Gwala
