The IFP welcomes President Cyril Rampahosa’s announcement today on igniting the economy with the economic stimulus and recovery plan adopted by Cabinet.
We have on numerous occasions called on the Executive to put forward an economic recovery plan and we welcome that our requests have been acceded to.
A lot of what has been announced today was mentioned before and nothing came of it. It does seem quite well timed to coincide with the ANC’s 2019 election efforts as we head to the polls next year.
We are thus cautiously optimistic that this recovery plan will grow the economy, open up barriers to growth and development and create a number of jobs in the various sectors identified by the President.
The IFP hopes that President Cyril Ramaphosa together with the Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene is not simply toying with the lives of millions of desperate South Africans in need of a job and suffering in the throes of poverty.
The economic recovery announcement does not exempt the President from accountability and transparency and he must immediately announce the 10 member Presidential advisory panel on infrastructure and the advisory panel on Land Reform that will guide government on fair and equitable land reform processes and redress the in justices of the past.
The IFP will use Parliamentary procedures to ascertain exact costs and detail on the funds and agreements signed with the private sector and development agencies to fund this plan.
Furthermore, the President would do well to walk his talk this time around as South Africans are quite frankly “sick and tired” of hearing government rhetoric with no action and no “real” plan to change the status quo in our economy.
The IFP will closely monitor the developments as they have been announced today.
