The IFP is deeply disturbed and shocked at the slow pace of government to establish purification centres dealing with contaminated water from acid mine drainage, and all of this whilst millions of South Africans are faced with a threatening shortage of water crisis.
IFP Spokesperson on Water and Sanitation, Inkosi Nsikayezwe Cebekhulu, MP said, “Two years on and there are still no implementations of the findings from the government’s R25 million rand Indaba to determine a solution. Both the minister of Environmental Affairs and the minister of Water and Sanitation must urgently implement healthy and reliable measures to curb the situation so that our people can have access to clean water.
“Acid mine drainage also poses a risk to underground water wells as the contaminated substances leak to the water table, affecting water supply for farmers,” added iNkosi Cebekhulu.
“The drought that has hit the country has already put severe strain on our communities and people. It requires urgent resolution,” concluded Inkosi Cebekhulu.
