SADESMO Devastated By University Strikes

The South African Democratic Student Movement (SADESMO) is devastated by the suspension of classes due to student protest going on in Universities due to fee increment issues and as a result we calls on the Department of Higher Education to resolve this matter urgently.

“The Department of Higher Education has been sabotaging our education through finance because that is where they knows we have difficulties to make ends meet. As SADESMO we believe that this continuous strike in the Universities is the due to the lacking of Department and seems to be part of department master plan to see the level of education continue to deteriorate in this time. Through the country University students are supposed to be getting ready for their exam, but they are unable to because they have to fight for their right to education which they are at the verge of being deprived of it in the next academic year,” said Ms Nonkululeko Nkwanyana of SADESMO.

“It is not so long, the Minister of Higher Education and Training, Mr Blade Nzimande himself during National election campaigning was heard saying that there would be free education which makes one wonder, if this still the road to free education or if is a system for poorer to lose out on their right to education and richer to be educated and continue to climb the co-operation ladder whilst the poorer suffers? Government must be on our side helping students preparing their future by meeting their promises of free education to us and make our education affordable to everyone not just for the minority,” she continued.

In conclusion, “this is very sad, it is disadvantaged students that are feeling the pain of these increment and the Department of Higher Education seems to care less about them hence they haven’t taken any initiative to an end on this mediocrity being imposed by Universities. We as SADESMO support the student protest and demand an affordable and reasonable fees for all because EDUCATION IS A RIGHT therefore the Department and Institutes shouldn’t make it a privilege ,” concluded Ms Nkwanyana.
