Safety of KZN Acting Head of Department of Agriculture Must be Prioritised

The Inkatha Freedom Party calls on the KZN MEC of Agriculture, Themba Mthemba and MEC for Community Safety and Liaison, Mxolisi Kaunda to urgently improve security for the Acting Head of Department of Agriculture after a security guard at Jerry Mfusi’s home was shot and admitted to the ICU.

“Mr Mfusi deserves to be protected because he is in charge of a department with a R2, 197 billion budget and the Department of Agriculture is where many people expect to get tenders especially in the distribution of seedlings, chemicals and other projects. This situation must be fully investigated not only because it is the Acting HOD’s house but because it involves peoples’ lives. This is a matter of life and death,” said IFP KZN Provincial Spokesperson on Agriculture, Mr Nhlanhla Msimango MPL.

“At this stage we cannot speculate who is behind the attack but we hope the police will conduct their investigation and arrest the suspects. Since KwaZulu-Natal is presently faced with many killings such incidents must be taken seriously. If death threats and shooting occur they leave many unanswered questions and disrupt peoples’ lives.

At this point in time when one is seen as a hindrance while protecting the public purse, those who want to loot it resort to violence and even killing them,” continued Mr Msimango.

“We expect the MEC of Agriculture to expedite this issue and he must ensure that he takes the necessary steps to prevent the unnecessary loss of life. He must act now and not wait for a tragedy to strike. They must abandon the culture of government reacting in a knee-jerk manner after the damage has been done, “concluded Mr Msimango.
