Scholar Transport Must Be Regulated

The Inkatha Freedom Party urges government to come up with regulated policies in order to manage school learner transport as pupils are still being transported in overloaded and unsafe vehicles.

IFP spokesperson on transport, Mr KP Sithole, MP, said, “The Minister of Transport and other involved stakeholders must work together and come up with a plan to ensure that pupils are being transported in the safest manner, that the drivers of the vehicles have valid driving permits and that the vehicles they are driving are roadworthy. Traffic officials must also regularly conduct full inspections of such vehicles on a regular basis, so as to further ensure the safety of learners ”.

“The recent spate of accidents involving learners since the commencement of this school term, one of which involved the death of a 5 year old girl in an overloaded vehicle, necessitates the urgency and immediate intervention required in this area of learner transport regulation. This should never have been allowed to occur. It is a shame and failure of this department ” concluded Mr Sithole.
