The IFP has taken note of inputs made by network operators such as Vodacom and MTN at public hearings in Parliament today, calling for the regulation of OTTs (Over the Top Services) such as WhatsApp, Viber and Skype. We oppose this move in the strongest terms possible.
In a time where data and the Cost to Communicate is already too expensive, calls for such regulation seem preposterous.
The regulation of these services will only serve to create more wealth for the major mobile operators, who are already in the habit of charging exorbitant prices on data, while again excluding the poor from communication services.
The IFP supports a policy, whereby “Over The Top” services are not hindered, blocked, interfered with, or discriminated against, at all, by any mobile network provider. This will not only hurt the South African public, especially our disadvantaged and poor communities, but may see OTTs pulling their services entirely from our country.
We applaud CellC for taking a stance against the regulation of OTTs.
