The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) calls on the World Health Organisation (WHO) to stop playing politics and include Taiwan in all WHO meetings, mechanisms and activities. As we pass the one-year anniversary of the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, with hundreds of thousands still being infected daily, cooperation is more important than ever.
By knowingly excluding Taiwan from its activities, the WHO is refusing to accept expertise that could make life-saving contributions in the fight against this devastating pandemic, which has to date claimed more than three million lives across the globe.
Now, more than ever, nations need to stand together, put politics aside, and work for the greater good. Taiwan has much to share, including the proven success of the ‘Taiwan Model’, which includes the use of innovative smart disease prevention systems for Covid-19 containment.
Further, now is not the time to isolate nations and hoard access to knowledge. Despite assertions to the contrary by the WHO and China, Taiwan is not being included – which, in turn, undermines the health rights of the Taiwanese people.
We implore the WHO – in the interests of the Taiwanese people, as well as the rest of the global family of nations – to accept Taiwan’s offer “to work hand in hand with WHO and other nations to overcome such formidable challenges”.
Only by working together, can we win the fight against Covid-19.
