Urgent Removal of Lamontville Clinic Security Guard Who Disclosed HIV Status of Patients

The IFP calls on the KZN MEC of Health, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo to urgently investigate and fire the security guard at the Lamontville Clinic south of Durban who is accused of publically disclosing the HIV status of patients.

“We want to know why this so called security guard is in charge of distributing medication to the patients. Where are the nurses employed to that? All of them must be fired because they don’t respect patients’ rights. The clinic manager must be held accountable because this happened under his/her watch. Such behaviour cannot be tolerated in our healthcare facilities, ” said IFP KZN Health Spokesperson, Mrs Ncamisile Nkwanyana,MPL.

“People have a constitutional right to privacy and do not have to disclose their status. Even employers cannot legally request a person’s HIV status or require a person to take an HIV test,” continued Mrs Nkwanyana.

“I encourage all the patients in Lamontville and other healthcare facilities whose HIV status has been disclosed without their consent to sue those involved in such violations of their rights including this so called security guard,” concluded Mrs Nkwanyana.
