In marking World Environment Day 2020 amid the global Coronavirus pandemic, many gains have been made in the preservation of ecological ecosystems as the world slowed-down harmful activity and reversed some adverse effects of climate change.
The theme of World Environment Day this year, is ‘celebrating biodiversity’ – a concern that is both urgent and existential. We celebrate this day annually on the 5th of June, to encourage awareness and environmental protection.
According to the United Nations, “the celebration of this day provides us with an opportunity to broaden the basis for an enlightened opinion and responsible conduct by individuals, enterprises, and communities in preserving and enhancing the environment.”
The day is celebrated by engaging governments, businesses, celebrities and citizens to focus their efforts on a pressing environmental issue.
It is with great urgency that we all address the myriad of environmental issues, such as ongoing deforestation, increasing global warming, plastic waste, food security, carbon pollution, and rising sea levels at home and abroad.
The IFP encourages all South Africans to participate in the campaigns, locally at ward level and to join together in community activities to eradicate the problems caused due to pollution and to strive in making the local and immediate environment clean and safe first.
If we all do our bit even on a micro level, every action has an impact. And every impact we make today, will preserve planet Earth as we know it for future generations to enjoy.
The IFP also notes that President Cyril Ramaphosa alluded to a programme of cleaning up our towns and cities across the country, however we eagerly await tangible action in this regard.
We believe that together we can make a change, because when we are united, we can reach our objectives of a cleaner, less-polluted, healthier and restored ecological and biosystems environment.
